Swim with us

We offer four sessions per week at Beatty Park. Depending on the day, we have 2 or 3 lanes separated by skill and fitness level. For first timers we recommend coming along to one of our Wednesday or Sunday sessions.

We recommend arriving 15 minutes before the session starts to stretch and warm up before getting in the water.

You're welcome to swim with us for up to a month before deciding whether to join. If you have fins bring those along. The club has kickboards and pull buoys available to borrow at the pool.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Got questions? Here are answers to some of the most common ones.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to join?

We have swimmers of many abilities and genuinely welcome all of them.

Sessions are split into lanes by skill and fitness level. On Wednesday and Sunday we have three lanes, so there's room for a range of speeds. You swim what you can manage; there are no hard rules.

That said, you'll get the most out of training if you can swim freestyle (front crawl) for at least 50m without stopping. Being comfortable with backstroke and breaststroke helps too, but it's not a requirement to get started.

What do I need to bring to training?

Swimwear, goggles, a towel, and fins (flippers). Fins are highly recommended and used in most sessions. A swim cap is optional. The club has kickboards and pull buoys available to borrow at the pool. A snorkel is handy for some drills but not required.

How much does membership cost?

We have an annual membership which covers insurance and registration with Masters Swimming Australia. Part of the fee is set by Masters Swimming Australia and is revised annually. It's approximately $200/year and shorter length memberships may be available depending on the time of joining. Concession pricing is available for students and holders of a health care card.

On top of membership, you'll pay for pool entry at Beatty Park. The club has access to a discounted Beatty Park membership, which can help reduce that cost. There's also a $3 lane hire fee per session, though this is currently waived until mid-2027 thanks to grant funding from the Department of Communities.

When do you train?

We train four times a week at Beatty Park Leisure Centre, North Perth.

  • Tuesday evenings 6:00–7:00 pm (distance focused)
  • Wednesday evenings 7:00–8:00 pm
  • Friday evenings 7:00–8:00 pm
  • Sunday mornings 7:30–8:30 am

We recommend arriving 15 minutes early to stretch before getting in the water.

Do I have to compete in events?

Competing is entirely optional. Many members choose to swim at masters events and open water swims, but plenty swim purely for fitness, fun, and community. If you do want to race, we'd love to cheer you on.

Do sessions run when it's raining?

We swim rain or shine. A session may be cancelled if the pool is closed due to severe weather, but we'll let members know if that happens.

Can I try a session before committing?

Yes, you're welcome to swim with us for up to a month before deciding whether to join. We recommend starting with a Wednesday or Sunday session. Do send us a message by email or on our social media accounts if you plan to come along so we can welcome you.

Events

Upcoming events

We compete in pool meets through Masters Swimming WA and open water swims throughout the year. Competing is entirely optional, but it's a great way to set goals, track your progress, and race alongside your clubmates. Check the calendars below to see what's coming up.

About the club

Founded in 2022

Perth Rainbow Swans is Perth's first LGBTQIA+ inclusive masters swimming club, formed in 2022 and affiliated with Masters Swimming Australia.

We started in winter 2022 with just a handful of members, one coach, and a single session at Beatty Park, launched against all conventional wisdom about when to start a swim squad.

From those early sessions, the club has grown into something much bigger. We now have over 60 members, four sessions per week, and five qualified coaches, and have become a home for swimmers of all backgrounds and abilities.

From the beginning, we’ve been built on the belief that competitive and social swimming should be genuinely welcoming to everyone, regardless of who they are.
